When NIS America released the first of what would become three Hyperdimension Neptunia video games a couple of years ago, it was a fresh and light-hearted take on video game fanboyism with female idols taking the roles of the major video game consoles of Wii, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3. The player took the role of Neptunia, who represents the former SEGA game consoles. The second game, Hyperdimension Neptunia mk2, repeated the formula with mixed results when it swapped personifications of home consoles for handhelds. Now, with Hyperdimension Neptunia Victory, developers Compile Heart and Idea Factory are at it again - this time with Neptunia going back in time to a representation of the video game industry in 1989. With it comes a handful of changes to the series. Some are for the better, but most seem like change for the sake of change.

Michael Engle: I want to preface this review by saying that if you like old-school RPG's, anime, and giant boobs, then Hyperdimension Neptunia Victory is for you. Niche games are niche, but I have to admit that this game speaks to the fourteen-year-old in all of us that felt that guilty tingle in their pants every time they watched Sailor Moon. This game is full of self-aware video game references and is very Japanese. Have I sparked your interested yet? We're on the verge of a bloody console war and this series is all about console wars... and hyperactive anime heroines. Victory takes things to the 80s, though, so don't expect any references to Sony and Microsoft's upcoming battle.

I feel as if over the course of these three games, I have gotten to know these girls and their personalities really well. This series have quickly become one of my favorites in gaming due to the uniqueness of the story and setting. This game may not be for everyone; if you are not a fan of anime style games or JRPGs you will likely want to pass on this title.
